Be Aware of National Locksmiths!
Updated: Mar 5
National locksmiths are more often than not just middle men, you don’t speak to a locksmith in person as it is a call center in which the local phone numbers you are calling are diverted. When you speak to someone in the call center they will ask for your address and find an engineer that is available in your local area.
The engineers they tend to use are often newly trained locksmiths with basic knowledge and very little experience as experienced locksmiths tend to have enough work themselves, so they don’t need to sub-contact. The engineer that comes to your house is instructed to charge you by the hour for the job plus the parts which are heavily marked up plus VAT.
In most cases customers are not informed of the additional charges or are misled to believe otherwise. The engineer that comes to your property will keep a small percentage of this fee and the rest goes straight to the national company, this in turn encourages higher fees.
Below are a few of the main reasons you should avoid using national locksmiths:
The prices are considerably higher, especially on weekends, bank holidays and out of hours.
National locksmith companies have a lot of overheads to cover such as advertising, staff and sponsored web links through Google and other search engines.
Customer service is very poor especially when the work has been completed and the receipt signed, any future problems will be blamed on the sub-contractor and the national locksmith company will not take the blame or make any efforts to resolve the issue.
They do not care about their reputation like a small local family run locksmith service does. Any problems you have will be up to the original sub-contractor to sort out, which may not happen.
How Do You Know If It Is A National Locksmith Company?
In the paper directory adverts that have a reference number at the bottom tend to be national locksmiths. Most adverts will say “Local Locksmiths” even when they’re not.
When you call them first ask what company you have called, in most cases of national locksmiths they won’t be able to answer as they have different companies in different areas.
National locksmith adverts tend to be a lot larger in size then small local locksmiths, but they can use lots of smaller adverts in different styles to make you think they are different companies, again check for the reference number at the bottom of the advert.
You will never speak to the locksmith directly on the phone to confirm the job or price, this is all controlled by the call center.
When booking the job, you will often be asked for your card details, local locksmiths would never ask for these. This also means that if you cancel your booking for any reason, such as you have found a local locksmith company which are half the price and can get their quicker, they can still recover the money owed, so be careful when handing over your bank details!
In most cases a national company would not quote you on the job before taking your address, this is because they need to see how far an available locksmith is from your home, if they are some distance away you can expect to pay more and wait longer!
